Contactless Capable

Can I punch holes into the card?

This may damage the chip and cause the contactless feature to stop working. If you choose to punch holes in your card, you are responsible for the cost of replacement if it no longer works ($20).

Can someone from our office bring everyone’s ID to the distribution point and pick them up as a group?

Due to security concerns, you are required to pick up your new 49er Card in person if you did not receive it during move-in or have it mailed to you.

Does my card carry any personal information like SSN, address or phone number?

No, it does not.

How do I replace my new 49er card if I lose or damage it?

Visit the 49er Card Office in the Auxiliary Services building. New cards are created and issued on the spot. Lost or damaged cards are $20.

I am a distance education student, can I get a 49er Card?

If you plan to be on the main campus, you are welcome to stop by the 49er Card Office and be issued a card. Or you can have a non-photo card to be mailed to you by submitting a request form.

I picked up my new card, how long before I can use it?

ACTIVATED IMMEDIATELY

  • Meal plans (meal swipes and Declining Balance)
  • Campus spending accounts (49er Account, DB, ODA)
  • Campus housing access (resident students)

ACTIVATED OVERNIGHT FOR USE NEXT DAY

  • Library services
  • Gym, academic building, and lab access
  • Kronos timekeeping systems (staff ); those who use Kronos clocks should continue using their old card until this date.

ACTIVATED WITHIN 7 DAYS

  • Charlotte Area Transit Buses (students)

FUTURE ACTIVATION

  • Lynx light rail access (students)

I take my classes at Center City. Do I need to go to main campus to pick up my card?

No. For students attending classes at the Dubois Center in uptown Charlotte, 49er Cards can be printed at the Center City Campus on a limited basis. Please submit a photo online. Once you receive a notification of your photo approval, please email rlorenzen@uncc.edu to request your card.

What do the two numbers on the front of the card mean?

  • The number beginning with 800 is your student or faculty/staff ID number. This number identifies you with the University and will not change. 
  • The 16-digit number is your card number. This number links the card to you. The number is generated when a card is issued or reissued. Should you need to replace the card, the number will change.

What is this number on the back of the card?

This number identifies you for CATS-LYNX ridership.

When I get my new card will I still be able to use my old card?

No. There is only one active card per cardholder.

When/where can I get my new 49er Card?

49er Card & Meal Plans Office (Auxiliary Services Building 175, between Prospector and Craver Road). 
Monday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

ID Card Office (First floor of the Student Union next to the salon)
Beginning Aug. 9, 2021: Monday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What to bring

  • Yourself - for security reasons, cards must be received in person and cannot be delivered or picked up for departments. 
  • Government-issued photo ID - driver's license or passport
